How to Find the Best Software Development Jobs in Finland

How to Find the Best Software Development Jobs in Finland

If you’re wondering what it will be like to work in one of the software development jobs in Finland, you should know it’s likely to be a bit “wild and watery”.

Finland is home to 188,000 lakes. In case you’re wondering if that’s a lot, it’s a global record. That’s the most amount of water in relation to land mass you’ll find anywhere in the world.

The country is also 70% forest, encompassing an area larger than the whole of Italy. A beautiful country to live and work in, there’s plenty allure to the opportunities that the country offers.

With IT industry sub-sectors that employ up to 27% foreigners, you can be certain that there’s a home for you in Finland, no matter where you’re from.

Drawing from our stats sourced from offers on MeetFrank, we’ll share all the data you need to find the best software development jobs in Finland and how they compare with others.

Finnish IT and software development industry: A game of jobs

Gaming. That’s Finland’s largest IT and software industry sub-sector. The sub-sector is no child’s play though.

Finland is home to world leading mobile gaming companies, Supercell, Rovio and Fingersoft. The market grew by 5.9% in 2016 and set a record high turnover the same year, generating more than $2.9 billion. The sub-sector experienced a compound average growth rate of 45% from 2004 to 2015. Crazy.

The larger IT industry is also very strong. The sector employs 6.8% of the country’s entire workforce, the highest figures in the EU for 2017. Turnover in the sector was $14 billion in the same year, a growth of 8% over 2016.

Our data also shows that offers on MeetFrank for software development jobs in Finland have increased by 49% over 2018.

And all of this is set to improve in the coming years. The government has allocated more than $450 million to the industry, including direct capital funding and regional grants. This funding has been directed to support various digital projects slated to run between 2018 and 2022.

The country is pulling out all the stops in its bid to ensure that Finland becomes the premier digital destination. A four-year $226 million program called “AI Business” has also been developed to fund Finnish businesses. The program, slated to run from 2018 to 2022, aims to provide international networks and support services to Finland’s businesses.

Who do employers want to hire?

Companies seem to have a clear strategy in their recruitment for software development jobs in Finland. They display a strong preference for experienced employees, particularly those that can fit into senior level roles.

Mid-level and lead roles are also receiving a lot of attention, constituting more than half of the total offers for software development jobs in Finland.

It seems there is less of a need for junior and entry roles at the moment, although that may change in the future.

There was very low activity in the recruitment drive for executives. This indicates greater stability in executive functions and lower turnover. Companies are not expected to build out their teams with 11 captains anyway. So, this is as expected.

Average salaries for software development jobs in Finland

Data from the MeetFrank platform on average salaries for software development jobs in Finland is structured along three tracks. We considered the data for average salaries per seniority, average overall and average per month.

The average per seniority indicates a continued trend of high wages in Finland. Entry level employees earned an average of €4,359 a month, more than a majority of their peers in other jobs and other countries earn, at lead or senior level.

Employees in junior roles earned pretty much the same amount though at €4360, giving no allowance for the greater experience a junior would have.

Mid-level and senior developers earned €4,861 and €5,090 respectively while lead developers earned €5,206. In an interesting quirk, executives earned less than senior developers, making €4,979 on average.

For overall salaries in offers on MeetFrank, we calculated the total average for 2019. Developers earned a minimum average of €3,113 per month, blowing away their colleagues in other countries, while the maximum average was €5,018.

The highest salary offered for a software development job in Finland was an unreal €10,600. Yeah, you have permission to drool at that one.

The monthly averages for January to July 2019 also indicated the high salaries earned by software developers in Finland. The average for January was €4,286 while February’s was €4,139. Although there was a decrease to €3,655 in March, salaries recovered pretty nicely to €4,137 in April.

Again, we observed that the summer lull that usually affects other job tracks didn’t really show up here. Between May to July 2019, the lowest average recorded was €3,951 in May and the highest, €4,085 in July.

Top 5 in-demand skills for software development jobs in Finland

Software development relies on pure skill, and employers require candidates to have quite a few of these skills. Working from our data on offers for software development jobs in Finland, we spooled the top 5 in-demand skills for employers.

At 7%, the majority of employers required competencies in full-stack development in candidates. Backend development, JavaScript and frontend development came in joint second at 6% each. While REST API made up the top 5, being required 4% of the time.

What skills do you need to earn really big, maybe cop your own ten-thousand-euro payday? Well, according to our data, you need a combination of competencies in full-stack development, backend development and JavaScript to earn upwards of €5,000.

Skill up to this level, and you can look forward to your own significant payday.

Software development jobs in Lithuania: The broad overview

The Lithuanian IT and software development sector is big. The sector employs 31,500 IT specialists, with 10,600 students in dedicated IT schools and up to 2,500 graduating annually. The country has made loads of investment in its info tech sector and this has set it apart as one of the best digital destinations in the world.

Lithuania’s biggest strength lies in its youthful and tech savvy labor force. One of the most versatile IT labor forces in Europe, the country’s work force is grounded in a wide variety of digital competencies.

Software developer jobs in Lithuania

Lithuania is rated 1st globally for digital / technological skills availability and is 3rd globally in mobile app creation. It has an open and inclusive work environment and ranks 1st in the EU for share of women scientists and engineers.

The country also has reliable digital infrastructure and is rated 5th globally in fulfilling business needs. With internet speeds blazing away at 65 mb/s, it has the fastest public WiFi in the world, also considered the most affordable internet in Europe.

The country has over 98% 4G broadband coverage and is already laying down 5G networks. 5G was launched in the country in 2018 with record speeds of 1.8 gb/s.

Whew! We need to catch our breath after that.

According to Lithuania’s 2019 business services report, the country’s global business services sub-sector grew by 13% in 2018, laying the foundation for a fantastic 2019.

Our data also revealed that offers on MeetFrank for software development jobs in Lithuania grew by 37% in the first 6 months of 2019.

Hiring trends for software development jobs in Lithuania

Lithuania has a highly skilled IT workforce, one of the best skilled in the EU. Employers are also aware of this and will make offers consonant with those skills.

MeetFrank data showed that employers made a lot of offers for software developers with skills for mid-level and senior roles. In fact, offers for these two levels were 2nd and 1st respectively, within the first 6 months of 2019.

Offers for lead roles were 3rd overall, while entry, junior and executive roles received the least attention. There was quite a distance between offers for senior, mid-level and lead roles, compared to the other roles.

Average salaries for software development jobs in Lithuania

The salaries per seniority do not entirely reflect this disparity in offers per role though. Entry and junior employees earned an average of €2,113 and €2,372 per month respectively. This makes sense, considering that candidates in these roles would be the least skilled members of the team.

Employees in mid-level roles earned almost €1,000 more, at €3,233 per month, on average. Senior team members earned €3425 and those in lead roles earned a close €3520.

The close spread between average salaries for these roles does not seem to indicate much difference in the skills and responsibilities of individuals in the roles.

Executives earned the most on average, with a monthly salary of €3,990. This is consistent with their role as team leaders and directors of strategy.

The general averages for minimum and maximum gross salaries did not display any close spread though. The average minimum between January and July 2019 was €1,499 while the average maximum was €3,281.

Software development jobs in Lithuania

The highest salary offered on the platform was almost double the average maximum though, at €6,000.

Monthly averages were a lot closer than that though. January started out with an average of €2,194 while February’s average was €2,068. The highest for the half year was posted in July, at €2,844.

There’s one intriguing aspect to the data though. Generally, summer months witness a reduction in general average salaries offered. This is often due to reduced recruitment activity during the period.

Software development salaries

The period was better than usual for software development jobs in Lithuania though. From the high point of €2,579 in March, salaries were barely lower in May as the average of €2,383 showed. June was even better with €2,518. Intriguing eh? Seems there wasn’t much of a summer break in Lithuania this year.

Most wanted skills for software development jobs in Lithuania

Out of a total of 106 rated skills, competencies in backend and full-stack development were required by employers 8% of the time.

Requirements for JavaScript, frontend development and SQL made up the rest of the top 5, being required 6%, 5% and 4% of the time respectively.

The top three skills provide all the insight you need if you’re wondering what skills are required to earn big. In order to make north of €4,000 per month, you need to be proficient in full-stack development, backend development and speak some pretty good Java.

Preferences of candidates and companies doing the most

Our data shows that Lithuanian users of MeetFrank want to work for startups, the coolest offices (don’t we all) and from remote workspaces. Companies that fit the bill include Baltic Amadeus, Rokkex and Kilo.Health.

Kilo.Health is a particularly interesting option. If you’re looking for a cool place to work, a company with a tagline that reads “rebels, weirdos, super socials or ultra silent ninjas – join our digital squad” should tick every box.

The company is a digital health startup with over 5 years in the industry. It runs 10 different products in the health industry including web applications, diet planners, customisable meal recipe generators etc. These “digital ninjas” are definitely out to kick off some beautiful disruption. Check them out here on MeetFrank.

A truckload of companies are currently hiring for software development jobs in Lithuania. The top ten amongst them include Cognizant Technology Solutions Lithuania, Auriga Baltics, Rokkex and ORCA Alliance. You can find everything you want to know about them on MeetFrank.
